Building Inspector

We are seeking a highly skilled Building Inspector to join our team at the City of Somerville. As a Building Inspector, you will be responsible for ensuring that buildings and structures in the city comply with the Massachusetts state building code and other applicable regulations.

• Conduct inspections of ongoing and completed construction projects to ensure compliance with building codes and regulations.
• Review and approve or disapprove plans for construction, reconstruction, alteration, or repair of buildings or structures.
• Investigate complaints and problems regarding building code violations.
• Make reports and keep records of inspections and investigations.
• Maintain required licenses and certifications, including the Massachusetts building inspector license.

• Working knowledge of inspection procedures and relevant municipal operations.
• Complete knowledge of construction methods and materials.
• Ability to read, interpret, and apply the Massachusetts state building codes.
• Knowledge of basic mathematics and ability to use standard references and charts.
• Bi-lingual ability preferred.
• Must possess a current valid Massachusetts Class III drivers license and access to a motor vehicle during working hours.
