Adjunct Instructor in Journalism

Classification: Adjunct Faculty

Location: District Wide

Compensation: Salary placement will be determined upon receipt of official transcripts and verification of previous work experience. Instructors with advanced qualifications or experience will be placed accordingly on the Adjunct College Salary Schedules.

FLSA Status: Exempt (no overtime accrual)

Position Type: Adjunct

Department: District Wide

Position Overview: The San Diego Community College District is continuously accepting applications for adjunct (part-time/substitute) positions across its three college campuses and various continuing education centers. While this does not guarantee immediate openings, qualified applicants will be included in the adjunct pool for potential assignments throughout the academic year. Hiring departments will reach out directly if your qualifications align with their needs. Applications will be purged approximately one year after submission, at which point an automated notice will be sent for re-application if desired.

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver instruction in accordance with established curriculum and course outlines.
  • Maintain professional conduct and uphold ethical standards.
  • Stay current in subject matter areas.
  • Fulfill professional responsibilities as a part-time/temporary faculty member.
  • Teach all assigned classes and maintain accurate records.
  • Create a supportive learning environment that encourages open discussion of ideas and issues.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Journalism or Communication with a focus on Journalism; OR
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism or Communication with a specialization in Journalism AND a Master's degree in a related field; OR
  • Possession of a valid California Community College Instructor Credential in Communication Services and Related Technologies; OR
  • Equivalent qualifications.

Working Conditions: Variable, depending on assignment.

Conditions of Employment: Selected candidates must complete several requirements prior to employment, including submitting official transcripts, providing a Certificate of Tuberculosis Exam, and undergoing a fingerprint clearance process.

Additional Information: Newly hired faculty members are required to submit official transcripts and pay for fingerprint processing. All new employees must provide a Certificate of Tuberculosis Exam and renew it every four years as a condition of continued employment.
