Job Overview:
The Green End Department Head is tasked with ensuring exemplary leadership in safety, manufacturing, and production processes from the log yard through to the lathe production areas. This role is crucial in meeting the manufacturing business plan objectives for the entire department.
The individual in this position must cultivate strong working relationships across various departments (including Dry Side, Maintenance, and Shipping) and foster collaborative connections with counterparts in sister facilities to exchange best practices.
Furthermore, the manager should possess a comprehensive understanding of how performance in their area influences other departments and the overall site operations.
Key Responsibilities:
The Green End Department Head is expected to exemplify safety leadership and cultivate a robust safety culture within their department and the broader site. Responsibilities include:
- Modeling safety standards and behaviors in alignment with core principles of integrity and fairness.
- Leading the development, implementation, management, and enforcement of policies and procedures.
- Driving the ongoing growth of the organization and strategically developing individual talent for succession planning.
- Optimizing production scheduling, product mix value extraction, and asset utilization.
- Managing and improving production and inventory costs within their area.
- Encouraging continuous improvement and innovation.
- Conducting performance management of direct reports, setting goals, and ensuring accountability.
- Exhibiting financial acumen by managing departmental costs effectively.
- Facilitating change and guiding others to adapt to new processes.
- Focusing on daily training opportunities to enhance team performance.
- Recruiting, retaining, and developing talent within the team.
- Coordinating activities with other departments and proactively addressing concerns.
- Resolving employee issues, fostering teamwork, and ensuring adherence to site policies.
- Participating in or leading capital project initiatives and problem-solving activities.
- Performing administrative and reporting tasks as required.
- Understanding asset integrity and effectively utilizing allocated capital resources.
- Leveraging downtime and production tracking data for informed business decisions.
Qualifications:
To be considered for this role, candidates should possess:
- A High School Diploma or GED.
- A minimum of five years of leadership experience in a manufacturing or industrial setting.
- Strong business and financial understanding, with the ability to align departmental performance with unit success.
- Proven ability to build and maintain positive relationships.
- Experience with production tracking systems data.
- Skills in motivating and developing a safety-focused, high-performing team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Knowledge of wood products manufacturing processes.
- Strong decision-making and problem-solving capabilities.
- Effective planning, organizational, and time management skills.
- A commitment to achieving departmental and unit manufacturing goals.
- A collaborative and inclusive leadership approach.
- Intermediate computer skills, particularly in MS Office.
- High integrity and a commitment to making sound decisions.
- A willingness to support a 24/7 operational environment, including potential weekend and holiday work.
- The ability to meet the physical demands of an industrial work environment.
