Roseburg Forest Products is seeking a highly skilled Forest Engineer to join our team. As a Forest Engineer, you will play a critical role in the design and implementation of logging roads and harvest units.
Key Responsibilities- Work independently in a forestry setting, under close supervision, to design and implement logging roads and harvest units.
- Assist in the identification of harvest units through field and office reconnaissance, utilizing GIS mapping and spatial analysis techniques.
- Design and layout harvest unit boundaries, including the establishment of Road Maintenance Areas (RMAs) and Leave Tree designations, in accordance with the Oregon Forest Practices Act.
- Perform basic design tasks and engineering field work, including the location, design, and field staking of forest roads and landing locations, with a strong understanding of road construction practices.
- Develop cost analyses for logging, road, and rock alternatives on projects, utilizing software such as RoadEng and AutoCAD.
- Produce GIS maps of roads, logging units, and develop road design packets.
- Utilize software such as Excel, Access, and Logger PC to manage data and perform calculations.
- Assist other Forest Engineers in their projects and perform engineering crew duties.
- Prepare State permit applications for harvest units and road construction projects.
- Search for, recover, and flag property corners and property lines.
- Research survey corners/property lines and map and survey interpretation.
- Assist in surveying construction sites, stockpiles, etc.
- Collaborate with the Operations Supervisor to ensure compliance with local landowner and agency regulations.
- Cut brush with hand tools and chainsaws.
- Participate in other forest-related activities, including forest fire suppression.
- Bachelor's degree or Associate's degree in Forest Engineering, Forest Operations, Civil Engineering, or 3 years of experience working in a forest-related position.
- Fundamental knowledge of logging systems and road construction.
- A basic understanding of the Oregon Forest Practices Act and general forest operations.
- Working knowledge of GIS, Word Processing, and spreadsheet computer programs.
- Ability to work productively on steep and adverse terrain in all weather conditions.
- Highly organized, self-motivated team player with a positive work environment.
- Ability to work independently in a forest environment, with close supervision on unusual or difficult problems.
- Strong safety conscience in all aspects of the job.
