Position Overview: The Senior Phlebotomist is responsible for executing phlebotomy and specialized specimen collection tasks for patients in both inpatient and outpatient environments, encompassing a range of routine to advanced functions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Efficiently processes, organizes, labels, and transports specimens while managing data input and extraction through the Laboratory Information System.
  • Ensures high-quality patient care during all procedures, adeptly addressing patient care and technical challenges as they arise.
  • Acts as a mentor and role model for junior staff, providing guidance and support.
  • Handles clerical duties, including responding to phone inquiries and faxing laboratory reports as necessary.

Essential Functions:

  • Engages with all members of the patient care team, ensuring clear communication and comprehensive reporting of relevant patient information.

Service-Related Duties:

  • Adheres to established protocols for the collection and processing of biological specimens, prioritizing STAT samples.
  • Performs specialized collections and procedures as directed, in accordance with competency standards and policies.
  • Registers patients and orders tests as required, utilizing the patient information system.
  • Files requisitions and reports accurately, ensuring proper documentation.
  • Independently resolves complex issues and communicates effectively with management regarding problem resolution.
  • Provides support to less experienced staff, setting the pace for workload and addressing workflow challenges.
  • Maximizes productivity by assisting colleagues and taking on additional responsibilities as needed.

Quality and Safety Standards:

  • Conducts daily check-off duties and maintains adequate supplies in the work area.
  • Implements interactive patient identification protocols.
  • Ensures accurate specimen labeling using two patient identifiers 100% of the time.
  • Recognizes and addresses discrepancies in requisition and specimen labeling.
  • Maintains a safe laboratory environment by adhering to all safety policies and procedures.

Financial Responsibilities:

  • Adjusts work schedule to meet departmental needs.
  • Utilizes time recording systems appropriately and efficiently.
  • Manages department resources, equipment, and supplies effectively.

Growth and Development:

  • Mentors team members and students to enhance their confidence and skills.
  • Participates in departmental projects and seeks opportunities for continuing education to expand competencies.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent education is required.
  • Completion of a phlebotomy/venipuncture course is preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience is required, including data entry and specimen handling.
  • Experience in neonatal/pediatric phlebotomy is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • No specific licenses required; however, certifications such as CPT or PBT(ASCP) are preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrates the necessary skills and competencies to perform assigned duties safely.
  • Exhibits strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively within a healthcare team.
  • Possesses excellent organizational skills to manage a demanding workload while maintaining accuracy.
  • Displays proficiency in computer systems, including Hospital/Laboratory Information Systems.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of specimen requirements and collection procedures.
  • Effectively communicates with patients, families, and colleagues, ensuring a customer service-oriented approach.

Supplemental Requirements:

  • Uniform and scrubs are not required; business professional attire is not mandated.
  • Employees may be required to be on-call during emergencies.
  • Travel may be necessary within the metropolitan area.
