JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for the accurate dispensing and management of both prescription and over-the-counter medications, while overseeing drug distribution and clinical pharmacy functions within the retail pharmacy environment.
This role ensures the implementation of safe and effective practices in accordance with established pharmacy policies regarding medication and patient care. Additionally, it involves providing clinical drug information and guidance on health-related inquiries, as well as training and supervising pharmacy staff.
DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Overall performance rating of below indicated essential job duties:
- Prepares medications by thoroughly reviewing and interpreting physician orders, identifying any therapeutic incompatibilities.
- Dispenses medications through compounding, packaging, and accurate labeling of pharmaceuticals.
- Monitors medication control by overseeing drug therapies and providing necessary interventions.
Completes pharmacy operational requirements by organizing and directing the workflow of pharmacy technicians; verifying their preparation and labeling of pharmaceuticals; and ensuring the accuracy of order entries, charges, and inspections.
Provides essential pharmacological information by addressing inquiries from healthcare professionals and counseling patients on their medication therapies, including performing these duties in an ambulatory setting.
Ensures compliance with state and federal drug regulations as mandated by the state board of pharmacy, the drug enforcement administration, and the food and drug administration. This includes monitoring nursing unit inspections, maintaining records for controlled substances, removing outdated and damaged medications from inventory, supervising support personnel, maintaining current registrations, and staying informed on existing and new legislation.
Administer approved CDC immunizations as requested.
EDUCATION/LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum requirement: Graduate of an ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy with a BS Pharmacy or PharmD degree.
- Knowledge of TJC, USP 797, 795, and 800, as well as federal and state regulations.
- Kentucky Board of Pharmacy Pharmacist license.
- Ohio Pharmacist license obtained within 90 days of hire.
- Achieves and maintains American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Achieves and maintains American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification within the first 90 days of employment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in hospital and acute care settings is preferred.
- Completion of a PGY-1 residency from an ASHP accredited program.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Constant exposure to moving mechanical parts and blood and/or body fluids, with a risk of infection. Occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and radiation. The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Occasionally required to maintain a stationary position (standing or sitting). Frequently required to walk and move about, operate a computer and other equipment, and utilize fine motor skills to handle instruments/devices. Constantly required to lift and/or move items up to 10 pounds, frequently lifting and/or moving items up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lifting and/or moving items up to 100 pounds. Constant communication with patients and other care team members is required, necessitating effective verbal and auditory skills. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Occasionally required to position oneself to meet patient needs.
