Position: Physician - General Internal Medicine (Primary Care)

This role qualifies for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), which offers reimbursement for student loan payments. Eligibility is contingent upon meeting specific criteria as outlined by VHA policy, and applications must be submitted within four months of appointment. The approval process, including award amounts (up to $200,000) and eligibility duration (one to five years), is conducted by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office following a thorough review of the application.

Basic Qualifications:

  1. U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA Policy.
  2. Medical Degree: Must possess a Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
  3. Licensure: Current, unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. jurisdiction.
  4. Residency Completion: Must have completed residency training recognized by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
  5. Language Proficiency: Must demonstrate proficiency in both spoken and written English.
  6. Board Certification: Board certification or eligibility in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine is required.

Preferred Qualifications: Significant experience in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine is highly valued. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, along with the ability to build effective relationships with healthcare personnel at all levels are essential.

Physical Standards: Candidates must meet the physical requirements for the position, including a pre-placement physical examination. This role is subject to drug testing. Physical demands include lifting 15-44 pounds, pushing for approximately 2 hours, reaching overhead, using hands and fingers, and standing or walking for 3-5 hours, with the ability to kneel as needed. Rapid mental and muscular coordination is also required.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct assessments and provide care for new and returning patients with diverse medical conditions.
  2. Order necessary diagnostics, consultations, medications, and therapies as clinically indicated.
  3. Address preventative health maintenance needs of patients.
  4. Complete all required documentation in the VA computer system, including clinical reminders and screenings, in a timely manner.
  5. Perform evaluations, including history and physical examinations, diagnosis, consultations, and treatment of adult patients.
  6. Supervise residents, fellows, and other trainees in the medical field.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
