Job Responsibilities and Qualifications

The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for coordinating and delivering high-quality, patient-centered respiratory care, adhering to departmental requirements and the standards of practice for the relevant state and specialty. As an essential member of the patient care team, the Respiratory Therapist conducts various diagnostic tests and therapeutic procedures while monitoring patients on both invasive and noninvasive mechanical ventilation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and document patient assessments, including breath sounds, airway patency, and cuff pressure. Perform diagnostic procedures to assess the need for and response to respiratory therapy.
  • Administer respiratory care therapies, such as oxygen delivery, aerosol medication delivery, and chest physiotherapy.
  • Assist with the placement of artificial airways and manage mechanical ventilation.
  • Monitor patients for therapeutic responses and notify providers, intervening as necessary in case of unintended responses.
  • Aid in the transportation of patients who are ventilator-dependent.
  • Respond to emergency situations, ensuring airway integrity and adequate ventilation during resuscitation as required.
Required Qualifications:
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification must be obtained within 1 year of employment start date.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support certification must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification must be obtained within 1 year of employment start date.
  • Associate Degree in a relevant field.
  • State Registered Respiratory Therapist, Certified Respiratory Therapy Technician (CRTT), or Licensed Respiratory Therapist credentials.
