The Security Equipment Monitoring Officer plays a crucial role in maintaining the safety and security of designated areas by operating and overseeing advanced detection systems. This position involves screening individuals entering the premises to identify and prevent unauthorized access of potentially harmful items. The individual in this role must exhibit a high degree of alertness, professionalism, and customer service while following established safety protocols and procedures. Responsibilities include reporting any suspicious activities or findings to the appropriate authorities for further assessment and action.

Key Responsibilities

Monitoring Individuals:
  • Ensure thorough monitoring of individuals as they pass through security checkpoints, confirming compliance with established procedures.
  • Assist visitors requiring guidance during the screening process, which may involve helping them remove items or explaining the procedure.
Alarm Identification:
  • Actively observe detection systems for alarm triggers indicating the presence of prohibited items.
  • Assess whether alarms are caused by benign objects or if they signify a genuine threat.
  • Conduct secondary screenings on individuals who trigger alarms, utilizing handheld detection devices or physical inspections as necessary.
Safety Protocols:
  • Follow established security protocols while operating detection equipment to ensure the safety of the environment.
  • Respond to non-police emergency situations, including alarms and hazardous material incidents.
  • Employ trained techniques to assist in managing potentially aggressive individuals as directed by medical staff.
  • Provide support to fellow officers in accordance with departmental policies.
  • Respond to general security concerns as instructed.
  • Maintain knowledge of personal protective equipment and its proper use.
Communication and Customer Service:
  • Effectively communicate with university personnel to ensure a coordinated approach to security and response to potential threats.
  • Deliver courteous and professional service to individuals at security checkpoints, addressing concerns with respect while upholding security measures.
  • Inform visitors and staff about university policies and procedures to ensure community safety.
  • Provide escort services as assigned.
  • Assist in securing events such as athletic competitions, concerts, and guest appearances.
  • Participate in disaster response efforts in line with university policies.
Documentation and Reporting:
  • Record any incidents or unusual occurrences during shifts and report them to supervisory staff.
  • Conduct investigations and prepare reports for non-criminal incidents as assigned.
Equipment Management:
  • Responsible for the setup, maintenance, and storage of detection equipment, ensuring it is operational and reporting any issues to supervisors.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Completion of relevant training within 30 days of hire is necessary, including:
    • De-escalation techniques and security training
    • CPR and AED certification
  • At least 12 months of experience in safety or security roles is required.
  • Prior experience with detection equipment in a security context is preferred.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to interact with diverse individuals are essential.
  • Attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols are critical.
  • Ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations is necessary.
  • Problem-solving skills are required.
  • Proficiency in using electronic systems and communication devices is essential.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
Physical Requirements

The Security Equipment Monitoring Officer must be capable of:
  • Standing for extended periods.
  • Walking, climbing, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Meeting departmental grooming standards.
  • Passing a comprehensive background check.
  • Obtaining necessary immunizations and medical clearances.
Work Environment
  • Shifts may vary, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Work may be conducted in various weather conditions.
  • Potential exposure to hazardous materials and stressful situations.
  • Proper use of safety equipment is required.
