Job Summary

Under the supervision of a licensed radiation oncologist, the Radiation Therapist is responsible for delivering high-quality patient care in a radiation oncology setting. Key responsibilities include setting up patients for treatment, following treatment protocols, documenting treatment performed, and collaborating with department staff to ensure efficient services.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Assessment
    1. Identify the type and area to be treated, preparing for simulation and actual treatment as needed.
    2. Utilize available reports and medical records to increase awareness of current or potential problems.
    3. Recognize patient problems and take appropriate action, seeking guidance from professionals as needed.
  2. Implementation
    1. Set up equipment and computer systems.
    2. Prepare and verify all required documents prior to treatment, including consents, medical orders, and plan quality assurance.
    3. Place reference markings on patients' bodies, if necessary.
    4. Position patients for treatment and verify imaging requirements.
    5. Perform time-out procedures.
    6. Document treatment in electronic medical records and relevant files.
    7. Perform minor equipment adjustments as needed.
  3. Advocacy/Patient Education
    1. Respond to patients' emotional needs by demonstrating empathy and relating in an appropriate manner.
    2. Explain treatment procedures, side effects, and dietary and skin care instructions to patients.
    3. Instruct students and cooperate with other department staff, including residents, nurses, and treatment planners.
  4. Coordination/Communication
    1. Maintain open communication and facilitate continuity of care for patients and families with healthcare team members.
    2. Participate in patient-centered conferences as requested.
    3. Actively participate in staff meetings.
  5. Professionalism/Education
    1. Demonstrate courtesy, common sense, and follow-through in all communications and practices.
    2. Assume responsibility for own career growth, recognizing the need to increase knowledge and stay informed of current trends and developments within the field.
    3. Expand skills and show initiative.
    4. Comply with work-related policies, including license renewal and other related certifications.
    5. Comply with all Medical Center policies and procedures for infection control, safety, administrative, and clinical practices, as well as Joint Commission guidelines.
