Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Lab Processing Assistant to join our team at Mayo Clinic. As a Lab Processing Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting our laboratory operations, ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of our testing processes, and contributing to the delivery of high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in pre-analytic specimen processing, ensuring that samples are properly labeled and prepared for testing.
  • Operate a variety of laboratory and office equipment, including automated systems and computer software.
  • Enter information and test orders into our laboratory computer system, maintaining accurate and up-to-date records.
  • Respond to phone calls and inquiries from patients, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders, providing timely and accurate information about laboratory testing and results.
  • Ensure correct patient identification on specimens, maintaining the highest standards of patient safety and confidentiality.
  • Document and resolve pre-analytic specimen-related issues, collaborating with colleagues to resolve any discrepancies or concerns.
  • Potentially perform complex reagent preparation, adhering to strict safety protocols and guidelines.
  • Manage work unit supply inventory, maintaining accurate records and ensuring that necessary supplies are available.
  • Provide training and support to colleagues, promoting a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
Requirements
  • An associate degree or high school diploma/equivalent, with a minimum of 2 years of work experience in a clinical laboratory or related field.
  • Previous experience or knowledge of computers, keyboarding, telephone operations, and other office equipment is highly desirable.
  • Ability to accurately read specimen labels and work with numbers to prevent mislabeling.
  • Must be organized, able to prioritize tasks, and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must possess excellent human relations skills, with the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team, adapting to changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Must be able to accommodate scheduling adjustments, off-shifts, holidays, and weekend work assignments.
  • Requires the ability to be attentive to details and adhere to strict safety requirements for handling chemicals, reagents, and infectious agents.
