Canonical, a pioneer in open source software and operating systems, is seeking an exceptional Software Engineering Manager to lead the gaming experience for Ubuntu. This is an exciting time for Linux gaming, with compatibility tools like Proton having matured.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for technology and gaming, driving them to work with intelligent, motivated colleagues. They should possess a unique blend of technical leadership and project management skills, ensuring the team's work aligns with company objectives.

This role entails:

  • Optimising and expanding the Ubuntu gaming experience, focusing on the Steam Snap.
  • Managing project timelines, balancing feature improvements with deadlines.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to ensure the team's work complements other teams' efforts.
  • Conducting code reviews, prioritizing quality, performance, and modern design principles.
  • Collaborating with upstream projects like Proton and partners like Unity to enhance Ubuntu's gaming capabilities.
  • Working closely with other teams to provide a cohesive and comprehensive Ubuntu experience.

We are looking for a skilled professional with:

  • An undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling narrative about their alternative chosen path.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with upstream projects and partners.
  • Familiarity and experience with the Linux graphics stack, encompassing user-space components and low-level kernel drivers.
  • Exceptional software project management skills, including risk assessment and resource allocation.
  • Ability to balance technical leadership with effective team management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for both internal and external interactions.
