About the Role

The primary objective of this position is to analyze samples using GC/MS methodologies, ensuring accuracy and precision in our laboratory results. As a GCMS Chemist, you will be responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting instruments, as well as developing new methods or modifying existing procedures to improve our testing capabilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Analyze air and vapor samples following EPA methodologies and laboratory SOPs, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
  • Document activities and report results in a concise and accurate manner, utilizing industry-specific software such as Target, Chemstation, or MassHunter.
  • Analyze and report QC samples as required, identifying and addressing any quality issues that may arise.
  • Perform routine instrument maintenance procedures, ensuring optimal performance and minimizing downtime.
  • Assist with preparation of related sampling supplies, including thermal desorption sorbent tubes, tube labels, pelican cases, and related documentation.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements
  • Possess a general knowledge of organic chemistry fundamentals, with the ability to understand terminology and principles to comply with analytical methods.
  • Possess strong computer skills, with knowledge in Excel and Microsoft Word, as well as experience with or ability to learn industry-specific software.
  • Must be organized, detail-oriented, and possess excellent problem-solving capabilities, with good time management skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to take ownership for meeting goals and objectives, with a willingness to be accountable for own decisions and actions.
  • Proficient English verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with peers, supervisors, and management.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 4-year degree in a scientific field, such as chemistry or biology.
  • 5+ years of GC and/or GC/MS experience in a testing laboratory.
Physical Demands
  • The ability to stand for intervals of up to 8 hours while working.
  • Able to speak and hear clearly while communicating with co-workers and managers.
  • Dexterity in hands and fingers to operate equipment and handle glassware.
  • Must have average vision and be able to see to read reports and operate equipment.
  • Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
