We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Scientist II - Biochemical Pathology to join our team at ProMedica Health System. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for performing routine and complex analytical procedures, recognizing deviations, and providing interpretation following established standards and practices.
Key Responsibilities- Perform testing, including maintaining established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, complying with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies, processing biological specimens for analysis, and evaluating and solving problems related to specimen collection and processing.
- Maintain equipment, including performing scheduled maintenance procedures and recognizing equipment malfunctions and acting according to established protocols.
- Ensure quality control, including performing, recording, and maintaining accurate quality control records, recognizing out-of-control results, and taking appropriate actions.
- Provide knowledge and support to the laboratory and healthcare team, including answering inquiries regarding results and factors affecting results, acting as a liaison, and maintaining patient confidentiality.
- Utilize computer systems, including performing routine inquiry and data input, ensuring accuracy of information, and taking corrective actions.
- Participate in training and competency assessment, including instructing new associates and students, assessing competencies of other test performers, and maintaining and upgrading personal professional development.
- Meet continuing education requirements, including completing required CE units, mandatory in-services, and maintaining and upgrading personal professional development.
- Provide guidance to coworkers in the absence of an on-site supervisor, including addressing staffing and technical issues that arise.
- Doctoral, Master's, or Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution.
- Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS.
- Certification as an American Society of Pathology (ASCP) MLS or Categorical eligible at time of hire with certification achieved within one year of hire.
The successful candidate will be required to wear personal protective equipment, including a lab coat, gloves, and protective eyewear, as needed. The position requires the ability to move continuously about the hospital and between workstations, with prolonged periods of standing. The candidate must be able to tolerate exposure to disease-bearing specimens, odorous chemicals, carcinogens, mutagens, low-level radiation, electrical hazards, and flammable liquids. The ability to differentiate colors and move, lift, or carry materials weighing up to 50 lbs. is also required.
