Position: CDL Driver - Local

Department: Drivers

Reports to: Regional Logistics Coordinator, assigned Dispatcher, or Store Manager

Exemption Status: Non-exempt or Exempt

Location: Store

Role Summary: As a local CDL Driver, you will be tasked with the safe transportation of goods and materials across various locations within the state. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure timely and secure deliveries while maintaining a professional demeanor.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Safely operate a tractor-trailer under diverse weather conditions.
  • Comply with all traffic laws, safety protocols, and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
  • Conduct inspections, maintenance, and repairs on vehicles as necessary.
  • Load and unload cargo securely, often utilizing a forklift.
  • Connect and disconnect trailers and operate piggyback forklifts safely.
  • Maintain accurate electronic and/or paper logs of vehicle operations and cargo.
  • Complete required paperwork in a timely and precise manner.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Report mechanical issues to the appropriate personnel and troubleshoot minor problems.
  • Follow delivery instructions and schedules as provided by Dispatch and Management.
  • Utilize GPS navigation and traditional maps for route planning.
  • Ensure all deliveries are documented with signatures and proof of delivery submitted daily.
  • Understand product specifications to avoid delivery errors.
  • Communicate any issues or delays to the appropriate contacts.
  • Maintain a courteous and professional attitude in customer interactions.
  • Provide excellent customer service consistently.
  • Keep company vehicles clean and well-maintained, notifying the necessary personnel for maintenance needs.
  • Fuel and prepare the truck for the next day’s operations.
  • Retain receipts for fuel purchases made with the company fuel card.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid CDL license and Medical Card.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Ability to pass background and Clearinghouse checks.
  • Capability to drive long distances.
  • Familiarity with local roads and traffic regulations.
  • Commitment to safety standards.
  • Ability to collaborate with a team of drivers.
  • Adaptability to various weather conditions.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Ability to follow supervisor or dispatcher instructions.
  • Capacity to lift and move heavy items.
  • Strong customer service skills.

Physical Demands:

  • Constantly sitting, seeing, and using hands and feet while operating a vehicle.
  • Frequently required to communicate verbally and audibly.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 60 lbs. and repetitive lifting of 45 lbs.
  • Some stooping, bending, and walking may be necessary.
  • Able to climb into and out of the truck cab and bed.
  • Access to the engine compartment and crawl under the vehicle for inspections.

Work Environment:

The majority of work is conducted inside a truck, with some outdoor tasks in various weather conditions. Employees may encounter rain, snow, and temperature extremes while driving or performing inspections.
