Job Overview

Position Summary

The Automation Systems Engineer is responsible for spearheading and supporting engineering initiatives within the Profile Products LLC sector. This role encompasses the execution of new capital projects, reliability engineering, and enhancements to existing systems. A robust foundation in Controls Engineering, coupled with a comprehensive understanding of mechanical, electrical, and process engineering, is essential for success in this position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and assist in the design and execution of significant capital projects within the Profile Products division, collaborating closely with the Plant Engineering team.
  • Engage with internal and external resources to fulfill capital project objectives, emphasizing safety, quality, and reliability in operations. Adherence to project timelines and budget constraints is crucial.
  • Analyze and refine current operational and maintenance procedures to enhance capital reliability and longevity, while minimizing downtime and maintenance costs through strategic capital initiatives.
  • Contribute to the New Product Development (NPD) process to ensure manufacturing and supply chain alignment.
  • Investigate, assess, and recommend capital enhancements, modifications, and upgrades as necessary.
  • Evaluate and source new and refurbished equipment and system upgrades, collaborating with external vendors when required.
  • Lead the design development of new process equipment, partnering with third-party suppliers to achieve organizational growth targets.
  • Drive improvements in business performance, manufacturing efficiency, throughput, waste reduction, overall cost of goods sold (COGS), and safety standards.
  • Evaluate and propose new technologies to support both new and existing product lines.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: The qualifications outlined below represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this role.

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of experience in machinery development, procurement, production process engineering, and/or project engineering.

Essential Skills: To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:

  • Experience in mechanical, electrical, chemical, and/or controls engineering within a manufacturing context.
  • Background in electro-mechanical process engineering.
  • Proven experience leading teams focused on capital projects and process enhancements.
  • Familiarity with wood-based production processes (e.g., MDF, HDF, Particle Board) is preferred.
  • Expertise in capital equipment optimization and implementation.
  • Experience in sourcing and specifying automation and sensing technologies.
  • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot machine inefficiencies and failures.
  • Experience in scoping, developing, and managing capital projects.
  • Knowledge of industry standards for machinery design, particularly regarding safety and guarding.
  • Strong analytical skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Problem-solving abilities and skills in system and method enhancements.
  • Hands-on experience with control systems and electrical software (e.g., AutoCAD, PLC software/hardware), preferably Allen Bradley (RS Logix, Studio 5000, etc.).
  • Familiarity with networking, system architecture, and communication protocols (e.g., Device Net, Profibus, Modbus).
  • Hands-on experience with robotics, drives (VFD, Servo), PLCs, I/O, and instrumentation (e.g., cameras, scales, sensors) is preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and ERP/MRP software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of preparing and delivering clear, concise reports.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks effectively and escalate issues when necessary.
  • Capability to meet deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong time management skills.

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
