Job Title: Electrical Distribution Designer

The purpose of this role is to apply technical skills to design complex projects that are safe, cost-effective, and reliable distribution power facilities for residential, commercial, and industrial projects.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare project and job packages that include material lists, requisitions, labor estimates, site drawings, and construction drawings for various installations of electrical facilities in a cost-effective manner that maximizes safety and service reliability.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, maps, change orders, improvement plans, construction specifications, procedure manuals, operational procedures, etc.
  • Perform drafting work and assist in the preparation of designs, plans, and reports.
  • Make accurate engineering calculations.
  • Collect and analyze field data and prepare accurate and detailed reports and records.
  • Learn, practice, and promote ALL safety policies and procedures 100% of the time.
  • Apply various codes, requirements, regulations, policies, and procedures to all assigned work to create safe and cost-effective designs for projects of a moderate complexity for both overhead and underground projects.
  • Use various design software and work management tools.
  • Evaluate distribution equipment such as transformers and fusing.
  • Follow utility construction practices on public right of way (ROW) and private land.
  • Regularly communicate job status to assure client expectations and deliverable dates are met.
  • Coordinate with construction personnel and clients to resolve any project issues.
  • Develop relationships with key internal and external customers while supporting both company and client's business goals and expectations while representing themselves both positively and professionally.
  • Maintain files and records in an organized manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma/GED is required. Associate degree in engineering, engineering technology, design technology, or a related field and at least one year of utility experience (preferred). A BS Engineering Degree will qualify for this position with no prior experience.
  • Proficient in basic principles and practices of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, general science, and scales of weight and measurements as applied to engineer's computations and construction (using currency and other forms of measurement).
  • Proficient user of Microsoft Office based applications.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries from customers, regulatory agencies, or the business community.
  • Ability to read and understand documents such as policy manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Utilized common-sense understanding in order to carry out written, oral, or diagrammed instructions.
  • Maintains confidentiality and uses discretion with business information.
  • Self-motivated, savvy, reliable, trustworthy, as well as technically competent.
  • Demonstrated team player.
  • Demonstrated time management skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to constructively manage multiple tasks.
  • Possess valid driver's license and vehicle suitable for business use (mileage reimbursement may apply).
  • Ability to participate in storm restoration activities as a "Driver", "Wire Guard" or "Assessor" if needed.
