This role is designated for on-call duties only, requiring approximately 8 hours of availability each week, including evenings, nights, and weekends.

Key Responsibilities:
  • The SANE nurse will perform comprehensive forensic assessments of patients, documenting evidence related to physical or sexual abuse that may be utilized in legal proceedings. Furthermore, the SANE nurse will conduct thorough forensic interviews with victims regarding the incidents of abuse.
  • During the forensic evaluation, the SANE nurse may need to gather specimens and DNA samples, capture photographic evidence of injuries, and carry out detailed physical and genital examinations based on the patient's preferences.
  • The primary objective of the SANE nurse is to ensure that patients receive essential medical care while providing emotional support and guidance throughout any necessary treatment processes.
  • Oversees the FNE/SANE staff, coordinating resources to effectively support operational procedures and facilitate the smooth flow of patients within the department.
  • Supports direct patient care by executing the nursing process to deliver safe, therapeutic, and high-quality care through patient assessments, establishing and implementing nursing care plans, and evaluating clinical outcomes as needed. Promotes an environment conducive to the delivery of safe and efficient patient care.
  • Acts as a resource for staff, which includes training and orienting new employees, providing daily work direction, and offering input on performance evaluations. Assigns, monitors, and reviews the progress and accuracy of work, guiding efforts on complex issues in collaboration with unit leadership.
  • Monitors staff assignments, maintains scheduling, evaluates staffing levels, and adjusts as necessary to uphold productivity standards within assigned areas.
  • Ensures the quality of care provided is in compliance with established policies and procedures, adhering to the guidelines set forth by the International Association of Forensic Nursing.
  • Collaborates with management to develop new and enhance existing programs and services.
  • Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to patients. This includes understanding the principles of growth and development across the lifespan and the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status to identify their specific needs.
Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required:
  • Registered Nurse license issued by the state of practice, and
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) must be obtained within 6 months.
Education Required:
  • Completion of an accredited nursing program.
  • Illinois-based nurses must obtain a certificate of completion from the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) after completing didactic training and clinical logs before practicing independently.
  • Wisconsin-based nurses must complete didactic and clinical skills training prior to independent practice as a forensic nurse examiner.
Experience Required:
  • Typically requires 1 year of clinical nursing experience in an acute care setting. New RN graduates will be considered.

  • Ability to implement evidence-based interventions and nursing skills tailored to the patient's individualized care plan.
  • Recognizes situational changes that necessitate unplanned interventions.
  • Proficient in computer skills, including keyboarding, navigating within a Windows operating system, and utilizing electronic medical records systems.
  • Exhibits excellent communication, listening, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates strong human relation skills, capable of developing rapport and maintaining professional relationships with patients, staff, and physicians.
  • Ability to make critical, independent decisions and anticipate learning needs while taking preventive actions.
  • Exhibits effective time management skills, capable of multitasking and prioritizing tasks.
  • Skilled in coaching and developing staff to meet the quality and service standards of the International Association of Forensic Nurses.
Certification Addendum:
  • Certification in the International Association of Forensic Nursing Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Adult/Adolescent (SANE-A) and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Pediatric (SANE-P) is encouraged.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, reach above shoulders, and twist frequently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist, lift up to 20 lbs. overhead, and carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.
  • Must be able to push/pull with 30 lbs. of force and perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with assistance.
  • Position requires the use of foot pedals on carts or machines.
  • May be exposed to chemical and hazardous waste, as well as blood and body fluids, and communicable diseases. Therefore, protective clothing and equipment must be worn as necessary.
  • Must have functional speech, vision, hearing, and touch, with the ability to perform fine hand manipulation skills for IV insertion and other procedures.
  • Operates all necessary equipment to perform job duties.
