Walworth NY, United States Uncommon Schools Full time

Company Overview
Uncommon Schools is a nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing high-performing public charter schools that deliver exceptional K-12 education in historically underserved communities.

We take pride in our diverse school environments, with over 60% of our educators and staff identifying as individuals of color.

Currently, Uncommon operates 53 schools, serving more than 20,000 students across five cities. We are honored that our graduates persist in and complete college at five times the national average.

Our success stems from a robust academic framework, complemented by co-curricular and social-emotional learning initiatives that equip students for college and future endeavors.

Rochester Prep manages six schools catering to students from kindergarten through 12th grade. We emphasize the importance of genuine relationships between educators and students, bolstered by effective school systems and an engaging instructional model that fosters both academic and personal growth.

Rochester Prep schools consistently rank among the top performers in the city, boasting an impressive 85% college acceptance rate.

Position Overview
As a History educator at Uncommon High School, you will collaborate with departmental teams to guide students toward becoming self-directed learners. Our educators become specialists in their subject matter and possess a strong ability to motivate and inspire high school learners.

By the end of their high school journey, students will be equipped for academic independence and prepared for collegiate-level coursework. You will teach a curriculum that emphasizes the analysis of World History, U.S. History, American Government, and Economics, in preparation for Advanced Placement (AP) and higher education.

Your role will involve helping students comprehend authors' perspectives and the significance of sourcing, while cultivating skills in argumentation, corroboration, inquiry, and historiography through the examination of primary and secondary sources.

Collaboration with the History department will be essential in setting academic and engagement objectives for students. Additionally, you will:

  • Engage with students' families to ensure they have access to necessary resources that support their learning needs.
  • Participate in weekly, school-wide meetings to foster community, embody our core values, and promote student success.
  • Work alongside your grade-level team to establish academic goals and refine instructional strategies.

Qualifications
We seek candidates who demonstrate a commitment to the mission of Uncommon Schools and share our vision of being an anti-racist organization. A proven dedication to supporting students' social-emotional and academic growth is essential, along with a genuine interest in impacting K-12 students in urban educational settings (1-2 years of experience preferred).

Academic proficiency in Education, History, Geography, Political Science, Criminal Justice, Social Sciences, or the Humanities is required. Candidates must possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution prior to commencing employment. If your degree is not in education, you must achieve certification in the state of New York within a reasonable timeframe after starting.

Benefits
Uncommon Schools offers comprehensive training, coaching, and support to help you thrive in a mission-driven environment that delivers high-quality education to our students and families. The starting salary will be determined based on various factors, including relevant professional experience, education, certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools.

We provide generous paid time off, including sick leave and school breaks, along with additional sustainability half days throughout the academic year. Other benefits include:

  • Extensive training and development opportunities
  • Pre-tax flexible spending and health savings accounts
  • Financial planning and wellness resources
  • 403(b) retirement savings program with employer matching
  • 529 college savings program
  • Public Service Loan Forgiveness application assistance
  • Fully paid medical leave
  • Short Term and Long Term Disability insurance

At Uncommon Schools, we are committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment that empowers our students and staff to succeed.
