Job Summary

The Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner works collaboratively with healthcare providers to assess, plan, and deliver patient care within the scope of their licensure.

Key Responsibilities
  • Obtains, compiles, and records patient medical data within the scope of practice identified by the Board of Nurse Practitioners.
  • Manages and treats work-related injuries and illnesses, providing immediate care and coordinating further treatment as necessary.
  • Investigates workplace accidents and incidents to identify causes and recommend preventative measures.
  • Collaborates with leadership to develop policies and procedures that ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.
  • Works under the direction of the Supervising Physician (SP).
  • Meets with SP on a weekly, if not daily, basis to review, report, and implement forms of patient care/treatment.
  • Participates in educational training initiated or provided by the SP.
Additional Duties
  • Participates in departmental and hospital-wide informational meetings and inservices, including staff meetings, hospital-wide forums, and seminars.
  • Reviews department and hospital-wide policies and procedures annually.
  • Contributes to the development of new services, programs, or processes.
  • Administers and/or orders diagnostic tests pertinent to the patients' needs.
Abilities and Qualifications
  • The Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner must be able to relate to and work with ill and disabled adult and pediatric patients, culturally diverse patients, and emotionally distressed patients.
  • Able to read, write, and speak English in an understandable manner.
  • Possess visual and hearing acuity, and/or the ability to assess, document, and implement action required to meet patient/family needs.
  • Able to cope with varying and unpredictable situations tactfully with staff, patients, family members, visitors, and the general public.
  • Able to respond to emergency and crisis situations in a timely and professional manner.
Continuing Education

Maintain national certification and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license by completing continuing education hours as required by your certifying body and the Arizona State Board of Nursing.

Physical Demands

The worker is exposed to contact with chemicals and infectious fluids, heavy lifting, constant standing, extensive close work, and extensive computer work.

Required Education and Experience
  • Azizona RN license.
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license.
  • Completion of Arizona State Board of Nursing-approved graduate-level advanced practice nursing program.
  • CPR/BLS certification (within 30 days of hire date).
  • Medical Examiner Certification for Department of Transportation (DOT) (within 2 months of hire).
  • Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) certification.
  • DOT drug screening certification.
  • Certified Occupational Hearing Conservationist (CAOHC) certification (within 6 months of hire).
  • Pulmonary Function Test certification by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) (within 6 years of hire).
Preferred Education and Experience
  • 2-3 years of Occupational Health NP experience, preferred.
  • ACLS (preferred).
  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) or COHN-S (preferred).

This is a safety-sensitive position.
