JOB SUMMARY
Under minimal oversight, delivers specialized services aimed at assisting students in overcoming or adapting to challenges in physical capabilities, thereby enhancing their access to educational resources. Reports to the Director of Special Services and Occupational Therapist Supervisor.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conducts assessments of referred students, evaluating aspects such as range of motion, muscle strength, tone, sensory systems, fine motor skills, self-help abilities, oral-motor functions, and visual-perceptual skills as necessary.
- Administers relevant standardized assessments.
- Shares evaluation outcomes with parents and educators.
- Collaborates with a multi-disciplinary team to develop personalized strategies, accommodations, and utilize adaptive tools.
- Designs, organizes, and implements occupational therapy sessions based on assessment results and recommendations; instructs students on the effective use of adaptive tools.
- Maintains accurate documentation for all assigned cases, including daily progress notes, quarterly summaries for Medicaid, and updates for Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) as mandated by law and district policy.
- Selects, orders, and manages adaptive tools tailored to individual student requirements.
- Engages with school staff and parents as necessary to discuss student progress and concerns.
- Participates as a member of the Assistive Technology Team when appropriate.
- Educates staff on effective intervention strategies for individual students.
- Aids in establishing transportation protocols for students with special needs as necessary; oversees the transportation of students to and from therapy sessions.
- Stays informed and knowledgeable about current research, trends, and methodologies relevant to school-based physical therapy services; attends training sessions, conferences, and workshops to enhance professional skills.
- Addresses inquiries, concerns, and complaints from staff, parents, medical professionals, and students regarding therapy services.
- Prepares and processes evaluation reports, intervention plans, case notes, and other necessary documentation.
- Operates various equipment including vehicles, power wheelchairs, manual wheelchairs, and office devices such as computers, printers, and fax machines; utilizes splints, braces, and other therapy supplies as needed.
- Interacts and communicates effectively with diverse groups including supervisors, colleagues, district administrators, students, parents, medical professionals, community agencies, vendors, and the public.
- Performs routine administrative tasks such as preparing reports, filing documents, answering phones, and managing office supplies.
- Undertakes related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- An Associate's Degree as an Occupational Therapy Assistant from an accredited institution recognized by the Commission of Accreditation of Therapy Education (CAPTE) is required. Experience in providing occupational therapy services, particularly in educational environments, or a comparable combination of education, training, and experience that equips the individual with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. A current, valid certification from the S.C. Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners and a valid state driver's license are mandatory.
