This role involves skilled maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel engine-powered machinery for the City of Hyattsville's Department of Public Works. The selected candidate will be assigned to the appropriate level based on their experience.


Job Responsibilities by Classification:

Mechanic I in the Fleet Maintenance Division is responsible for performing a variety of skilled tasks related to the upkeep and repair of gasoline and diesel engine-powered machinery.

The tasks range from minor repairs to comprehensive overhauls of equipment, including but not limited to mowers, saws, passenger vehicles, trucks, tractors, loaders, compressors, pumps, and other heavy machinery.

This position requires proficiency in welding and machine shop operations, reporting directly to the manager of fleet operations, with work coordinated by the senior mechanic in the department.

Mechanic II in the Fleet Maintenance Division undertakes various skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel engine-powered machinery.

The responsibilities include everything from minor repairs to the complete overhaul of equipment, such as mowers, saws, passenger vehicles, trucks, tractors, loaders, compressors, pumps, and other heavy construction machinery.

Mechanic II duties encompass assisting other employees by providing instruction, demonstration, and monitoring of their work as directed by the Manager of Fleet Operations or Superintendent of DPW Operations.


Key Responsibilities by Position Level:
Mechanic I:

Under the guidance of the Senior Mechanic, Mechanic I employees will service various equipment, including hand and mechanical tools, vehicles, and machinery utilized by city personnel.

Servicing tasks include, but are not limited to, oil changes, lubricating chassis, replacing hydraulic fluids or hoses, repairing tires, cleaning vehicles, and minor repairs of hand tools and equipment.

Mechanic I employees may also install exhaust systems, mufflers, heaters, shock absorbers, radiators, spark plugs, filters, brakes, wheel bearings, and other related components.

Mechanic I employees may assist higher-level shop employees by inspecting equipment for mechanical and electrical issues, determining the extent of repairs needed through visual inspection and diagnostic testing, and repairing automotive equipment as necessary.

Maintaining a clean and safe work environment is essential, along with securing work tools as required.

Mechanic II works independently to assess equipment for mechanical and electrical defects, determining the necessary repairs through visual inspection and diagnostic equipment.

They are responsible for maintaining tools and a safe workspace, aiding others in their tasks, and providing necessary documentation and diagrams.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Considerable knowledge of maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel engines and equipment.

Thorough understanding of tools, equipment, materials, and practices used in the automotive field.

Knowledge of safety practices and occupational hazards.

Skilled in operating mechanical equipment and tools common to the trade.

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions effectively.


Physical Demands and Work Environment:

This role requires the operation of potentially hazardous tools and equipment, working in various weather conditions, and the ability to lift and carry items up to 100 pounds.

Manual dexterity is necessary for working on equipment and inputting data into computers.


Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Mechanic I requires a minimum of 2 years of experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel engine-powered equipment.

Mechanic II requires five years of relevant experience.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, customers, and the public.

Experience with diagnostic equipment and preventative maintenance systems is preferred.

Training or directing the work of others is desirable for the Mechanic II position.


Licenses and Certifications:

A.S.E certification and/or manufacturer certification is preferred.

A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) must be obtained within the first 6 months of employment.

A valid CDL must be maintained, along with a safe driving record.
