Role Overview:
The Special Education Support Specialist plays a crucial role in assisting educators to cater to the diverse needs of students with disabilities. The primary responsibility is to support and enhance the educational journey of these students through both instructional and non-instructional activities.

LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
The State of Illinois mandates that Special Education Teaching Assistants possess one of the following:
  • Current Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL)
  • Current Illinois Substitute Teaching License
  • Current Illinois Educator License with Stipulations Endorsed-Paraprofessional Educator:
    • Requirements include: Associate degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution; 60 semester hours of coursework from a regionally accredited institution; High school diploma or equivalent + 480 or higher on the ETS Parapro test; High school diploma or equivalent + 4 or higher on the ACT WorkKeys Applied Math and Workplace Documents.
  • Current Illinois Short Term Approval (STA) - Paraprofessional:
    • Requirements include: Minimum Age - 19 years old, Application in ELIS ($50 application fee), Proof of High School Graduation - copy of diploma, copy of transcript showing graduation date, GED, etc.

Typical Responsibilities:
  • Assist in providing a variety of activities for a well-rounded instructional program, allowing students to observe, question, and explore.
  • Reinforce concepts following lessons.
  • Work with students individually or in small groups on academic subjects, essential life skills, and other assigned tasks.
  • Implement behavior modification plans tailored for individual students as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information.
  • Foster positive relationships with all students, school staff, and parents.
  • Observe and document student progress.
  • Assist individuals or groups of students during various activities, including lunch and transportation safety.
  • Support hygiene and toileting activities, which may involve transferring and lifting students. Sanitize classroom and equipment using approved materials.
Physical Requirements:
The employee must regularly sit, stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. Occasional lifting or moving of up to 100 lbs may be required, such as lifting a child from the floor. The employee must be capable of pushing/pulling items up to 100 lbs, such as children in wheelchairs.

Work Environment:
Hazards may include potential exposure to communicable diseases and contact with bodily fluids; potential exposure to physical injury from aggressive behavior.
