Position Title:

About this Role:

The Director of Emergency Management and Safety Operations (DEMSO) plays a pivotal role within the leadership team, serving as a key figure in emergency preparedness and safety operations. This position is integral to coordinating campus-wide emergency planning, incident response, and safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities:
The DEMSO is tasked with developing and overseeing emergency management strategies that align with the university's unique structure and requirements. This includes:

  • Creating and implementing emergency management protocols and safety operations.
  • Directing the administration and training of the university's emergency management program, which encompasses preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation.
  • Ensuring business continuity during emergencies, including natural disasters and other critical incidents.

The DEMSO must reside locally to respond swiftly to emergencies and may be required to work outside of regular hours, including nights and weekends.

Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants should possess a Bachelor's degree in emergency management, public safety, or a related field, or have a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience. Additional requirements include:

  • 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience in dynamic operational environments.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Authorization to work in the US.

Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced qualifications such as a Master's degree in a relevant field or 7 years of experience in emergency management are preferred. Candidates should also have:

  • 5 years of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of emergency management regulations and guidelines.
  • Experience in higher education emergency management principles.
  • Proficiency in developing comprehensive emergency management plans.

Required Certifications:
Certification in the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command System (ICS) is required.

Duties & Responsibilities:
The DEMSO will lead the Emergency Assessment Advisory Team to identify potential risks and formulate effective response strategies. Responsibilities include:

  • Developing and managing emergency policies and plans.
  • Regularly testing emergency communication systems.
  • Conducting exercises to assess emergency response effectiveness.
  • Acting as Incident Commander during emergencies.
