Job Summary

As a Shipbuilding Machinist at Chesapeake Shipbuilding, you will be responsible for safely and efficiently performing machine labor for equipment and machinery common to maritime vessels and/or general industry. This includes but is not limited to pumps, valves, winches, and gearboxes. You will have an aggressive work ethic with a focus on production and be able to work independently and with teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Apply basic machine shop math and demonstrate layout proficiency.
  • Disassemble various types of equipment and machinery, and set up and operate portable machining tools.
  • Perform overhaul, maintenance, and testing of pumps, valves, turbines, condensers, shafts, rudders, and winches.
  • Set up and operate drill presses, and properly care for and safely use hand and power tools.
  • Other duties as assigned based on operational needs.

Requirements
  • Experience with troubleshooting and repairing various mechanical equipment, including ANSI pumps, various types of compressors, blowers, fans, gearboxes, and mixers.
  • Experience installing below-deck auxiliaries, such as evaporators, heaters, pumps, condensers, and connecting them to the proper equipment.
  • Experience in the removal, repair, and modification or overhaul of various types of marine shipboard equipment and systems, such as valves, pumps, hydraulics, turbines, reduction gears, generators, anchor windlass and steering gears.
  • Experience reading and understanding blueprints, sketches, and templates.
  • Experience with manual and semi-automatic welding procedures.
  • Familiar with industry codes and regulations.
  • Safe use of all tools and equipment.
  • Ability to work outside in heat, inclement weather, and cold, and to crawl, kneel, crouch, climb, and bend around and under equipment, on ladders up to 24' at heights up to 70', stairs, scaffolds, through small accesses, enter inside of tanks, and confined spaces, through hatches, and manholes throughout much of the work shift.
  • Occasionally lift/move up to 75 pounds.
  • Able to work over bodies of water.

Working Conditions
  • Weather, fumes, high noise levels, moving mechanical parts, equipment, and vibration.

Shift
  • Monday - Friday
  • Day Shift: 7:00am - 3:30pm
  • Summer hours: 6:00am-2:30pm
  • Overtime and Weekend required based on business needs

Salary
  • $20 - $30
