Evendale, United States GE Aviation Full time
Job Overview

This position is part of the Commercial Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) Mechanical Design team within GE Aviation's Engineering Division. The team focuses on the design and development of CMC components utilized in the High-Pressure-Turbine (HPT) and Combustor Module of advanced Commercial Turbofan engines.

As the Advanced Lead Engineer, you will be instrumental in guiding and supporting initiatives aimed at enhancing durability and fleet support for CMC HPT components. Your role will involve driving design and manufacturing modifications to align with program specifications, while collaborating with diverse teams, including mechanical design, materials engineering, data science, manufacturing, quality assurance, and program management. You will leverage insights from previous programs and fleet data to inform the next iterations of component design.

Key Responsibilities

  • Acquire comprehensive knowledge of hot section design, CMC design, and module integration. Understand how your team's work contributes to current and future commercial programs and the CMC Integrated Product Team (IPT). Stay informed about market trends and competitive dynamics.
  • Exercise sound judgment to propose innovative solutions to design and manufacturing challenges. Utilize on-the-job training and prior experience to address tasks effectively.
  • Oversee project plans and action items to achieve component durability maturation goals. Lead small teams to ensure timely completion of deliverables and communicate any scheduling pressures.
  • Identify engineering requirements for manufacturing, considering manufacturing capabilities. Develop corrective actions for any manufacturing discrepancies, weighing the benefits of process changes against sound engineering justifications.
  • Communicate technical challenges and requirements to other teams. Utilize historical engine test data and fleet performance insights to drive engineering enhancements. Document significant findings with technical rigor.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related STEM field from an accredited institution, with a minimum of 6 years of relevant engineering experience, OR a Master's degree in the same fields with at least 4 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Skills

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with experience in guiding small teams.
  • Excellent communication abilities and proficiency in technical documentation.
  • Demonstrated project management skills with the capacity to handle multiple projects concurrently.
  • Effective problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to make informed, risk-based decisions.
  • Experience mentoring others in resolving complex engineering challenges.
  • Familiarity with hardware ownership, jet engine design, and combustor design.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (Unigraphics NX), GD&T, and assembly stack-ups.
  • Prior experience with RCCAs/TOPS8Ds and composite design or manufacturing.
  • Experience with non-conformance reviews or Material Review Board (MRB) processes.
