Job Overview and Responsibilities

The position of Forensic Scientist is an entry-level role designed for training and development within the criminal justice field. The selected candidate will be responsible for processing DNA samples obtained from authorized individuals and submitted by law enforcement agencies in compliance with relevant state regulations. This role involves generating DNA profiles from these samples and integrating them into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), where they will be cross-referenced with profiles from unsolved criminal cases. The Forensic Scientist will carry out standard technical tasks but may also support Senior Forensic Scientists with specialized assignments and initiatives within the Forensic Program.

Essential Requirements

  • A fingerprint check is mandatory prior to employment.
  • Candidates must successfully complete a Background Investigation, which may include a Criminal Background check and a review of governmental records.
  • A Medical Evaluation is required, and candidates must obtain clearance before employment.
  • Successful completion of a Drug Screening test is a prerequisite for hiring.

Qualifications

  • To qualify for the Forensic Scientist position, candidates must meet the minimum qualifications outlined in the class specifications and be eligible for transfer, reinstatement, or possess current list eligibility.
  • Candidates with a degree in physical or biological sciences who lack 3 semester hours in Quantitative Analysis may take the examination but must provide proof of completion of these hours before appointment.
  • To qualify for the Senior Forensic Scientist role, candidates must be eligible for transfer, reinstatement, or possess current list eligibility. This classification does not provide an ongoing examination.
