Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Chemical Operator/Treatment Specialist to join our team at Perma-Fix Environmental Services. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for performing waste processing and treatment activities at our treatment, storage, and disposal facility (TSDF).

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Perform waste processing and treatment activities in accordance with established procedures.
  • Initiate and maintain daily process logs to track activities and ensure quality control.
  • Verify materials stored and processed for quality assurance and quality control purposes.
  • Handle containers, including palletizing, ringing, stacking, and labeling.
Daily Activities
  • Work with hazardous and non-hazardous radioactive matrices, including aqueous and solid forms.
  • Process hazardous and non-hazardous radioactive solids and sludge.
  • Decommission hazardous and non-hazardous radioactive lab packs.
  • Handle mercury and other elemental heavy metals, asbestos, and potential blood-borne pathogens.
  • Operate industrial processing equipment and tools.
  • Recommend management actions to improve standard operating procedures.
  • Initiate nonconformance, incident, and near-miss reporting.
  • Identify and requisition processing supplies and reagents.
  • Interact with facility personnel to achieve departmental objectives.
  • Contribute to department-level quality assurance initiatives.
Requirements
  • High school graduate or equivalent (college, vocational, or job training in a technical field preferred).
  • 40-hour OSHA Hazwoper Certification with current 8-hour refresher.
  • 16-hour radiation safety training with current 4-hour refresher.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Personality conducive to teamwork and collaboration.
  • Ability to follow written and oral directives.
  • Facility equipment operations level training.
  • Facility waste operations training.
  • Facility quality assurance program operations level training.
  • Annual respirator fit test qualified and ability to function in all levels of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Written and verbal communication skills.
  • Displays of professionalism and a commitment to excellence.
  • Ability to multitask and apply analytical evaluation to assigned work.
  • Sit-down, counter-balanced lift truck operator's license.
Working Conditions
  • Heavy lifting and exposure to excessive noise during floor operations.
  • Ambient weather conditions and seasonal extremes of temperature.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including masks, air-purifying respirators, and Tyvek suits.
  • Working with radioactive and hazardous waste, including chemical reagents and industrial processing equipment.
