As a Lead Inpatient Facility Medical Coding Specialist, you will provide essential coding services directly to healthcare providers. Your role will be pivotal in strengthening the healthcare system by ensuring compliance with our rigorous documentation standards.
Schedule: Full-time (40 hours/week with at least one weekend day). Employees will adhere to the weekly schedule and can select between Tuesday - Saturday OR Sunday - Thursday OR work both weekend days, with the option for occasional overtime.
We provide 4 weeks of training, conducted virtually from your home, with hours from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Monday-Friday.
You will have the flexibility to work remotely from anywhere within the U.S. while tackling challenging tasks.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Accurately assign ICD CM and ICD PCS Codes for inpatient services in a hospital environment, understanding their implications on the DRG with reference to CC/MCC, while following official coding guidelines and the established coding protocols of the assigned facility.
- Extract additional data elements during the Chart Review process as necessary.
- Uphold the ethical standards of coding as set forth by AAPC and/or AHIMA.
- Maintain required performance levels in coding quality and productivity as established by UnitedHealth Group.
- Provide constructive feedback to providers and query physicians when necessary.
- Stay current with coding knowledge by reviewing materials recommended by management.
- Engage in coding department meetings and educational opportunities.
- Keep accurate records of charts coded, held, and/or missing.
Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma/GED (or higher).
- Professional coder certification from AHIMA and/or AAPC (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, or CPC-H) to be maintained annually.
- 3+ years of experience in Acute Care Inpatient medical coding (hospital, facility, etc.).
- Experience in a Level I trauma center and/or teaching hospital with expertise in complex procedures, major trauma ER encounters, cardiac catheterization, interventional radiology, orthopedic and neurology cases, and observation coding.
- Proficiency in ICD-10 (CM & PCS) and DRG coding.
- Ability to fulfill all pre-employment requirements, including drug screening and background checks.
- Willingness to work the weekly schedule (40 hours/week) with options for Tuesday - Saturday OR Sunday - Thursday, including occasional overtime and one weekend day based on business needs.
- 2+ years of outpatient facility coding experience.
- Familiarity with OSHPD reporting.
- Experience with various encoder systems (eCAC, 3M, EPIC).
- Proficient in using a personal computer in a Windows environment, including Microsoft Excel and EMR systems.
