Key Responsibilities


The primary role of the Geotechnical Engineer in Training (EIT) is to assist the geotechnical team by coordinating and overseeing field investigations, conducting technical analyses, and preparing reports under the guidance of a licensed Geotechnical Engineer.

Successful candidates will quickly familiarize themselves with geotechnical investigation methods and design tasks for transportation projects, including bridge foundations, embankments, cuts, subgrades, pavements, retaining walls, and ground improvement.

Candidates will primarily communicate with internal HDR staff on assignments but should also be comfortable engaging with HDR's external clients as needed.


Traits of a successful Geotechnical EIT include the ability to organize, coordinate, and execute field exploration efforts, perform geotechnical analyses, and develop geotechnical reporting documents.

This position typically requires an EIT designation.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills, a collaborative spirit, and a strong willingness to learn.

The successful candidate will work closely with HDR's geotechnical team to complete assigned tasks and will embody the values of HDR's employee-owned culture.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • EIT or the ability to obtain within 6 months. Candidates without their EIT will hold the title 'Geotechnical Designer' and will be expected to obtain it for career advancement.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and relevant software applications.
  • A commitment to actively participate in our employee-owned culture is essential.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Experience in supporting proposal preparation and developing geotechnical data/engineering reports.
  • Ability to assist in analyses related to soil and rock slope stability, foundation design, retaining wall design, lateral deep foundation response, and pavement condition assessments and thickness design.
  • Proficiency with geotechnical software such as gINT, Slope/W, APILE, LPILE, and settlement software, along with the ability to create and execute designs using spreadsheets.
  • Local candidates are preferred.
