Position Overview

ROLE SUMMARY:

Under the guidance of the Donor Services Director or designated personnel, the incumbent adheres to established protocols and standards set forth by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB). The primary responsibility is to ensure the effective and secure collection of blood from volunteer donors, all while fostering a positive and reassuring atmosphere to enhance the donor experience.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Verify the availability of donor blood bags and necessary supplies in the donor area to meet operational demands.
  • Maintain precise manual and digital records related to quality control and blood collection activities.
  • Conduct collection procedures across various donor categories, which includes gathering demographic data, medical history, performing mini-physical assessments, executing venipuncture, and monitoring for any donor reactions.
  • Provide post-venipuncture care to donors, which may involve offering refreshments and attending to those experiencing reactions such as fainting or nausea.
  • Enhance public relations with donors, recruitment personnel, staff, and sponsoring organizations.
  • Fulfill educational and certification prerequisites as established by the organization and adhere to good manufacturing practices (cGMP).
  • Execute additional tasks as assigned.

REPORTING STRUCTURE:

The employee is expected to complete daily tasks punctually and collaborate with colleagues across departments to deliver optimal service to donors.

The position reports directly to the Director of Donor Services.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program.

Experience:

  • Successful completion of clinical training following the phlebotomy program.
  • Preferred: One year of experience in a healthcare setting, including vital sign monitoring and patient care.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Basic clerical skills for maintaining clear quality control and donor records.
  • Proficient in basic computer operations, including data entry.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Effective communication skills with donors, demonstrating exceptional customer service.
  • Professional appearance in accordance with established policies.
  • Physical capability to lift up to 35 pounds.
  • Consistent attendance record of 95% or higher.

CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Phlebotomy certification is advantageous.
  • CNA certification is a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Employees must regularly engage in standing, walking, reaching, stooping, kneeling, bending, twisting, and pushing/pulling activities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This role involves working in a community blood center with potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens, necessitating adaptability to various blood collection environments and a flexible work schedule.
