Job Overview

Position: Patient Care Assistant - Medical Surgical Float Pool

As a vital member of the healthcare team, the Patient Care Assistant provides essential support to nursing staff in delivering fundamental care to patients. This role adheres to the policies and procedures of The Nurse Connection, as well as the standards set forth by applicable healthcare regulations and the New York State Department of Health.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Support
  • Perform personal care tasks such as bathing, skin care, toileting, grooming, and oral hygiene.
  • Assist patients with their meals and monitor their intake and output.
  • Weigh patients using various scales and assist in their positioning and mobility.
  • Utilize medical equipment safely and effectively, including mobility aids and transfer devices.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in patient rooms and assist with bed-making.
  • Transport patients and necessary supplies throughout the facility.
  • Support nursing staff and other healthcare professionals as required.
  • Encourage and assist patients in ambulation and perform basic dressing changes.
  • Conduct skin assessments and report any concerns to the registered nurse.
  • Administer heat or cold therapy as directed by nursing staff.
  • Respond to patient calls promptly and take appropriate actions.
  • Collect and label specimens accurately.
  • Measure and document vital signs, reporting any irregularities to the nursing team.
  • Communicate any changes in patient conditions to the Nursing Supervisor immediately.
  • Engage in interdisciplinary case discussions as necessary.
  • Uphold confidentiality regarding all patient and staff information.
  • Complete annual training requirements in line with agency policies and state regulations.
  • Enhance skills through participation in relevant professional development opportunities.
  • Maintain a professional appearance in accordance with agency dress standards.
  • Foster a collaborative and respectful relationship with patients, families, and team members.
Qualifications
  • Current and valid New York State Certification for Nursing Assistants is required.
  • Minimum of six months of full-time CNA experience in a long-term care setting.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an accredited agency.
