Job Overview

Position Summary:

The CNC Machine Operator is responsible for the setup and operation of computer numerically controlled milling machines to execute machining tasks such as boring, milling, contouring, facing, and threading components made from various materials including castings, forgings, and bar stock. This role involves ensuring precision and quality by inspecting work against specifications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interprets process sheets, blueprints, and sketches to ascertain machining requirements, dimensional specifications, and operational guidelines;
  • Modifies existing programs under supervision when necessary;
  • Implements program enhancements and resolves issues;
  • Secures workpieces in chucks or fixtures;
  • Selects and installs preset tooling in accordance with process specifications;
  • Initiates and conducts machining operations;
  • Monitors numerical control displays and compares with process data to confirm adjustments in dimensions, feed rates, and machining speeds;
  • Utilizes controls to override programs and rectify machine performance;
  • Conducts inspections on initial and subsequent pieces to ensure compliance with specifications;
  • Organizes materials for upcoming orders to minimize cycle and setup time;
  • Prepares tools prior to installation in the milling machine;
  • Operates additional machine tools during machining cycles;
  • Processes both metallic and non-metallic materials;
  • Sets up and operates CNC machines following setup sheets and instructions with minimal oversight;
  • Employs various inspection instruments to verify work against specifications independently;
  • Possesses knowledge of cutting tools and determines appropriate machine speeds and feeds;
  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment;
  • Understands shop routers and SPC charts, ensuring product acceptance through operator verification;
  • Undertakes other assigned tasks as required.

Supervisory Role:

This position does not include supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications:

A high school diploma or GED is required. A minimum of three years of experience in a machine shop, with at least five years of CNC experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary. Candidates must be able to interpret safety regulations, operational instructions, and procedural manuals. Proficiency in writing reports and effective communication skills are essential. Mathematical skills including probability, statistical inference, and geometry are required to address practical situations. The ability to solve problems and manage various concrete variables in non-standardized situations is crucial.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with Lean Training, 5S Training, and familiarity with network environments is advantageous. Proficiency with Hurco machines and controls (Conversational and 'G' Code) is preferred. Experience in selecting cutting tools, insert tools, and understanding speeds & feeds, along with the use of diverse measuring equipment, is beneficial.

Employees will work in proximity to moving mechanical parts and may occasionally be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. Lifting limitations set by the company will be enforced. Employees must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
