Perioperative and Recovery Room Registered Nurse

POSITION SUMMARY
The perioperative and recovery room registered nurse is accountable for comprehensive patient evaluation, care, and education in both preoperative and postoperative settings. This nursing role employs the nursing process to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
REPORTING STRUCTURE
1. Reports directly to the Director of Clinical Services.
2. Oversees Medical Assistants assigned to patient care.
3. Indirectly reports to the Center Director.
COLLABORATIVE RELATIONSHIPS
1. Works alongside nursing staff in pre-op, intra-op, and post-op areas, as well as with ancillary personnel, including radiological technologists and medical assistants, to deliver safe and effective patient care.
2. Partners with business office staff to facilitate patient admissions efficiently.
3. May participate in facility committees aimed at enhancing quality patient care.
4. Collaborates with physicians to foster positive relationships and effective communication.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Manages the admission and preparation of patients for surgical procedures:
- Ensures patients understand the procedure, including communication with family members or support persons.
- Coordinates with business office staff to maintain efficient patient flow.
- Provides necessary information and education to patients.
- Completes thorough nursing assessments and documentation.
- Initiates IV treatments as required.
2. Delivers professional postoperative nursing care by utilizing the nursing care process and formulating a patient care plan:
- Evaluates the patient's recovery from sedation and/or anesthesia, making informed nursing interventions.
- Recognizes life-threatening arrhythmias and initiates appropriate responses.
- Monitors vital signs and level of consciousness through effective communication and observation.
- Performs venipuncture for IV restarts and administers medications as prescribed.
- Prepares patients for discharge with appropriate postoperative instructions and education.
3. Develops and implements patient care plans:
- Assigns tasks, educates, and supervises care provided by ancillary staff.
- Assesses patient needs and conditions using professional nursing judgment.
- Administers and manages narcotics and medications responsibly.
- Keeps accurate patient records and documentation.
4. Evaluates patient outcomes and adjusts care plans as necessary in collaboration with nursing staff and physicians, participating in quality improvement initiatives.
5. Provides emergency care as required.
6. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care, understanding the treatment needs across various developmental stages.
7. Engages in staff meetings, committees, and educational programs to fulfill personal and professional development goals, as well as regulatory requirements.
8. Upholds patient safety and ensures adherence to safe practices.
9. Exhibits the competency required to deliver high-quality patient care.
10. Contributes to a positive work environment as a member of the Center team.
11. Complies with facility policies and procedures, assisting in their development as needed.
12. Performs additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Possess a current and valid registered nurse license in the state.
- Have a minimum of three years of clinical experience, preferably in an ambulatory surgery environment.
- A Bachelor’s degree in nursing is preferred.
- BCLS certification is required (renewed every two years).
- ACLS certification is mandatory.
- Experience in IV therapy is essential.
- Ability to communicate effectively with healthcare professionals and patients alike.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Must demonstrate adequate mobility and strength to perform job responsibilities.
2. Ability to lift a minimum of 35 pounds safely.
3. Capable of pushing gurneys with patients weighing up to 400 pounds (with assistance).
4. Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel, reach overhead, and assist in transferring patients safely.
5. Must possess visual, auditory, and verbal communication skills in English.
6. Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
7. Must be able to wear a lead apron as required.
