Job Description

The City of New York's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is seeking a highly skilled Civil Engineer Assistant to join their team. As a key member of the Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC), you will play a crucial role in the design and implementation of capital projects.

The selected candidate will assist in the implementation of capital projects through the design phase by preparing engineering documents for water tunnels, wastewater treatment systems, and other large, complex facilities. This will involve preparing plans, specifications, and related calculations, conducting field visits, and reviewing shop drawings and material approvals.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in civil engineering, with a focus on structural design. They will be proficient in the use of AutoCAD and Revit, and have experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) programs such as STAAD Pro, RAM Elements, or SAFE. Additionally, they will have excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the design and implementation of capital projects
  • Prepare engineering documents, including plans, specifications, and related calculations
  • Conduct field visits and review shop drawings and material approvals
  • Collaborate with other engineers and stakeholders to ensure project success

Requirements:

  • Baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college
  • One year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work, with a focus on structural design
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and Revit
  • Experience with FEA programs such as STAAD Pro, RAM Elements, or SAFE
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in civil engineering from an accredited college

  • Experience in shaft and tunnel structural design and/or building/facility design
  • Experience in the application of code requirements and preparation of technical reports and submitting formal design calculations
