Job Summary

We are seeking an Equine Specialist to join our team at Meadows Behavioral Health. The successful candidate will assist in the facilitation of equine experiential activities, monitor patient safety, and perform stable maintenance tasks as required.

Responsibilities
  • Assess patient needs and provide activities that are appropriate to age, development, needs, and interest.
  • Instruct patients in grooming and horse handling procedures, as well as equitation skills.
  • Document activity sessions in the patient record.
  • Act to preserve patient safety during activities.
  • Communicate with clinical, medical, and nursing staff regarding any changes in patient status.
Equine Responsibilities
  • Follow horse training procedures to maintain standard equine performance levels.
  • Monitor the health and behavior of horses, reporting any concerns to the Equine Program Director.
  • Clean stalls and complete other stable maintenance tasks as required.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) required.
  • EAGALA Certification preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid and CPI required.
  • Minimum of 3 years equestrian experience required.
  • Three years' experience facilitating group equine activities in a patient care setting preferred.
  • Three years' experience facilitating group recreational activities preferred.
  • Three years' experience in facilitating challenge course activities preferred.
  • Ability to provide excellent service to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to effectively listen, process received information, and express ideas both orally and in writing in English.
  • Ability to initiate action, take personal responsibility, suggest improvements, and solve problems within scope of job without being asked.
  • Ability to understand and comply with government, regulatory, and company rules.
  • Ability to record, report, and maintain confidentiality of information and respond to requests for information.
  • Ability to get assigned work done in an acceptable manner, in the time allotted, with minimal prompting or reminders.
Physical/Working Conditions and Requirements
  • 20% time sitting (computer and telephone use, attending meetings)
  • 30% time standing (greeting visitors, copying, faxing, filing)
  • 25% time walking (touring grounds, distribution)
  • Up to 25% time bending (access files/reports/supplies)
  • Up to 50 pounds weight lifted/carried
  • Ability to use telephones extensively; ability to relay clear written messages; ability to use computer keyboard and calculator extensively
  • Ability to effectively read, write, and process information; ability to input/retrieve information to/from computer and files
  • Ability to converse with others to give, take, and process information in English; extensive use of telephone. Ability to hear alarms and pages.
  • Occasional/limited exposure to: Infection and to the risk of blood-borne diseases; hazardous agents, body fluids, and wastes; unpleasant patient or departmental elements; to potentially violent/aggressive patients/staff/visitors, critical incidents, and/or sentinel events.
  • Occasionally needed to work irregular hours or additional hours.
