Position Summary:


The Certified Surgical Technologist plays a crucial role in patient care by supporting surgeons and nursing staff throughout surgical procedures. This includes establishing and maintaining a sterile environment and ensuring the availability of necessary instruments and supplies in a sterile manner, adhering to the established patient care protocols.

Demonstrates proficiency in performing a wide range of surgical cases, including complex procedures, either independently or with assistance.


Responsibilities:


Under the guidance of RN/MD, the Surgical Technologist facilitates patient care by assisting the surgical team before, during, and after operations. This includes:

  • Creating and maintaining a sterile field, ensuring all instruments and supplies are prepared according to the surgical plan.
  • Adhering to unit standards and processes to deliver age-appropriate care.
  • Participating in cost-effective clinical care measures.

Additionally, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for:

  • Planning, setting up, executing, and cleaning up after surgical procedures, acting as both circulator and scrub tech.
  • Operating specialized equipment used in surgeries and maintaining the integrity of instruments.
  • Performing room turnover and terminal cleaning while utilizing supplies efficiently.

Maintains knowledge of aseptic principles to uphold a sterile environment, recognizing and addressing contamination issues as they arise. Assists nursing staff with instrument and sponge counts, demonstrating proper counting techniques and understanding policies regarding discrepancies.

Understands and applies proper positioning techniques to protect patients during procedures, ensuring safety and comfort.

Adheres to all policies, procedures, and safety standards, completing annual education requirements and contributing to quality improvement initiatives as needed.


Qualifications:

Minimum Education:


Education requirements are not specified; however, candidates must meet the standards for certification as required by the relevant authority.


Minimum Experience:
No prior experience is required with certification.

Licensure Requirements:


Candidates must possess a current and active national Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
