POSITION OVERVIEW

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will spearhead the creation of innovative mechanical designs for our sophisticated 3D visualization and guidance apparatus tailored for microsurgery. This role demands close collaboration with electrical, optical, software, and systems engineers, alongside product management teams.

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will engage with both internal and external stakeholders to deliver intricate designs, including high-resolution optical cameras, robotic positioning systems, and thermal management solutions.

Beyond design and development, this role involves partnering with a diverse marketing and engineering team to translate market needs into actionable engineering specifications. Collaboration with internal departments such as Software, Quality, Procurement, and Production, as well as external partners like suppliers and industrial designers, is essential.

The ideal candidate will also play a crucial role in transitioning products from development to manufacturing, focusing on workflow optimization, production equipment design, and enhancing throughput.

Additionally, the Senior Mechanical Engineer will work alongside project and systems engineers to establish timelines, define budgets, and derive system/subsystem requirements.

This position also includes mentoring junior engineers, fostering a culture of excellence in design, maintaining comprehensive design documentation, and ensuring robust verification records.

The candidate will guide junior staff in essential engineering skills, including vendor interactions, transforming vague marketing concepts into precise engineering requirements, and collaborating with Manufacturing and Service teams to prioritize customer needs.


COMPENSATION AND TRANSPARENCY
The salary range for this role is between $120,000 and $145,000, reflecting various factors such as experience, skills, educational background, and market conditions. This range is subject to change and may be adjusted in the future. The position may also qualify for bonuses, equity, and comprehensive company benefits.

The stated salary range represents a good faith estimate of potential base compensation for a successful applicant at the time of this posting and may be modified later.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

1. Leading design initiatives for new product development and ongoing enhancements of existing offerings.

2. Providing expert Mechanical Engineering insights and best practices for research, development, and sustaining projects.

3. Enhancing Engineering and Operations processes, including engineering change order workflows and vendor qualification protocols.

4. Actively contributing to design work, engineering analyses, and prototyping for proof-of-concept products and assemblies.

5. Creating designs that fulfill all requirements, including documentation, compliance, reliability, testability, manufacturability, and performance.

6. Conducting root cause analyses for design failures and implementing improvements to mitigate such issues.

7. Developing manufacturing tools and procedures that enhance efficiency, product yield, and cost-effectiveness.

8. Providing cost and schedule estimates for various engineering tasks.

9. Leading technical design reviews with multidisciplinary teams and senior management.

10. Mentoring junior Mechanical Engineering personnel.


QUALIFICATIONS
To be successful in this role, candidates should possess:

- A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 4 years with a Master's degree; or a PhD with 2 years of experience; or equivalent qualifications.

- Experience in medical device design, particularly in electromechanical systems.

- Proficiency in designing for IEC 60601 medical safety standards.

- Expertise in 3D CAD modeling and the creation of detailed 2D drawings, preferably using SolidWorks.

- Advanced knowledge of GD&T and the ability to perform complex tolerance analyses.

- Experience with FEA for early design validation (static, dynamic, thermal, modal, etc.).

- Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, and machining.

- Understanding of engineering tools including FMEAs, statistical techniques, Design of Experiments, and dynamic mechanism design.

- Knowledge of precision mechanical design and optical system design is preferred.

- Capability to quickly prototype designs, from minimal proof-of-concept models to full pre-production units for system-level validation.

- A solid grasp of materials science and finishing technologies.

- A broad understanding of other engineering disciplines (Electrical, Software, Firmware, Systems Engineering, etc.).
