Position Title

Registered Nurse - Cardiac Catheterization Lab

Position Summary / Career Interest:
The Cardiac Catheterization Lab RN delivers high-quality, evidence-based nursing care; evaluates the patient before and during the procedure; observes electrical and hemodynamic parameters; administers moderate sedation under physician supervision; aids in advanced diagnostic and invasive procedures; may undertake additional responsibilities such as circulating or monitoring as trained and assisting the Cardiologist as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities:

• Demonstrates the professional, clinical, and/or technical competencies required for the assigned unit or department.

• Prepares the Cath Lab procedure area by ensuring sufficient supplies are available.

• Develops and contributes to a comprehensive care plan for the patient throughout the procedure.

• Prepares the patient and necessary equipment for Cath Lab procedures, including site preparation, monitoring equipment, and managing intravenous/arterial lines.

• Administers intravenous and oral medications as required.

• Attends to patient needs during the procedure.

• Monitors hemodynamic, electrical, and angiographic data throughout the procedure.

• Assists in testing arterial and venous blood samples following various monitoring protocols.

• Circulates during the procedure as necessary.

• Engages in life-saving measures such as defibrillation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

• Participates in the orientation and training of new staff members.

• Adult (18-64 years)

• Geriatric (65 years and older)

Essential Job Functions:
  • Ensures the Cath Lab procedure area is adequately stocked and prepared.
  • Contributes to a patient-centered care plan during the procedure.
  • Prepares both the patient and equipment for procedures, including site preparation and monitoring equipment.
  • Administers medications as prescribed.
  • Addresses patient needs throughout the procedure.
  • Monitors critical data during the procedure.
  • Assists in the evaluation of blood samples based on monitoring parameters.
  • Circulates as needed during procedures.
  • Participates in emergency response measures.
  • Engages in the training of new staff.
  • Exhibits the necessary professional competencies for the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma.
  • Associate's Degree in Nursing with a focus on Perioperative & Procedures - ADN prepared nurses hired after a specific date must complete a BSN degree within five years of employment.
  • Experience in ICU/ED or prior Cath Lab experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
  • Two or more years of experience in ICU/ED.
  • Experience in Cath Lab (including Cath Lab and/or EP Lab).
Required Licensure and Certification:
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Licensed Registered Nurse (LRN) as per State Board of Nursing regulations.
Preferred Licensure and Certification:
  • Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) certification from Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) OR
  • Acute/Critical Care Nursing (Adult) (CCRN) certification from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses Certification Corporation (AACN).
