Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled Private Lands Biologist to support the implementation of the Working Lands for Wildlife (WLFW) Aquatic Connectivity Framework and other Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) water quality initiatives/projects in Kentucky. This project is a collaboration between the Commonwealth of Virginia and the USDA NRCS, funded by NRCS's WLFW effort.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation of the WLFW Aquatic Connectivity Framework and other NRCS water quality initiatives/projects in Kentucky.
  • Collaborate with landowners, farmers, and forestland managers to promote sustainable conservation practices on working lands.
  • Develop and implement conservation plans to enhance wildlife habitat and improve water quality.
  • Conduct fieldwork, including moderate hiking in all seasons and weather conditions.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with landowners, farmers, and forestland managers.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders, including landowners, farmers, and forestland managers, as well as NRCS staff and other partners.

Requirements

  • M.S. degree in aquatic ecology, hydrology, wildlife science, fisheries science, natural resource management, agricultural sciences, or similar discipline.
  • Or B.S. degree with demonstrated experience in private lands management and technical assistance.
  • General awareness or experience working with NRCS conservation programs and/or software.
  • NRCS Conservation Planning certification and/or Job Approval Authority and/or Technical Service Provider status.
  • Knowledge of federal and state agency conservation and wildlife programs, such as the Farm Bill, the Endangered Species Act, or State Wildlife Agency Private Lands Programs.
  • Demonstrated experience working with agricultural land owners.
  • Demonstrated skill with both verbal and written communications.
  • Experience with geospatial information systems.
  • Experience with aquatic habitat restoration projects.
