Job Summary

The U.S. Probation Office for the District of Colorado is seeking a highly qualified Chief U.S. Probation Officer to lead the Probation staff. This is a full-time permanent position that requires strong leadership and management skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Organize the Probation Office to ensure efficient handling of investigative work for the court, institutions, and parole authorities.
  • Review, analyze, and interpret statutory, Judicial Conference, and Parole Commission requirements for the administration of pretrial, probation, and supervised release services.
  • Maintain liaison with the Chief Judge and other judges, making recommendations on policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Select and recommend candidates for appointment as probation officers and approve personnel matters.
  • Manage office staff, including clerical, professional, supervisory, and administrative personnel.
  • Ensure all personnel are carefully selected and adequately trained, providing qualitative and quantitative measures of work performance.
  • Promote a safe and harassment-free work environment, fostering conditions that encourage staff commitment, enthusiasm, and positive morale.
  • Make estimates of personnel, space allocation, and operating allowance needs, approving requisitions and certifying vouchers for payment.
  • Formulate the annual budget and manage all federal appropriated funds subject to Court approval.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with other probation and pretrial services offices and with all components of the criminal justice system.
Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship and full FBI background investigation.
  • Progressively responsible experience in the investigation, supervision, counseling, and guidance of offenders in community correction or pretrial programs.
  • Three years of progressively responsible specialized experience, earned after completion of a bachelor's degree, and three years of substantial management experience.
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited university, with preference given to those with a Ph.D., J.D., or master's degree from an accredited university.
