Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead unit and shared governance activities to improve patient care and outcomes.
  • Assess unit needs and identify opportunities for improvement, serving as a clinical resource for staff and coordinating education initiatives.
  • Role model compassionate communication with physicians and the interprofessional healthcare team, assuming leadership responsibilities at the bedside, unit, and institution levels.
Essential Functions:People:
  • Foster staff engagement by demonstrating active listening, requesting and acknowledging feedback, and supporting organizational goals.
  • Role model fair and consistent leadership skills, coaching staff to use efficient and effective communication to establish and maintain a team environment.
  • Function as a mentor and resource to unit staff, providing oversight for students, new employees, and preceptorships.
Service:
  • Lead patient and family-centered care standards, mentoring others regarding specialty populations and auditing plans of care.
  • Maintain ongoing interactions with patients, families, and staff to improve patient care through leader rounding and ensure effective collaboration with other departments.
  • Drive department service standards and activities to improve patient satisfaction on the unit-based scorecard.
Quality/Safety:
  • Model the standards of care related to the nursing process, participating in meeting and improving nurse-sensitive quality indicators and patient safety goals.
  • Coordinate nursing care throughout the shift, considering patient acuity, staff skill level, and safety to ensure that our duty to our patients can be met.
  • Facilitate seamless patient flow to/from/through the department, leading the delivery of quality family-centered care throughout the continuum of care.
Finance:
  • Implement department strategies to achieve financial targets on the unit-based scorecard, mentoring others to do the same through timely documentation of care and optimizing efficiency.
  • Attend daily care coordination rounds to facilitate patient progression and ensure that follow-up has been implemented on any concerns or issues identified by the team.
  • Provide input into unit resource utilization, including unit capital and operational budget needs, and oversee shift-by-shift resource utilization.
Growth/Innovation:
  • Foster identification and implementation of innovative solutions for practice changes to improve patient care or unit operations, leading and/or participating in unit projects and shared governance activities.
  • Investigate and incorporate evidence-based practices, supporting change initiatives and adapting to unexpected changes.
  • Expand individual nursing knowledge and coach staff to grow in knowledge, abilities, skills, and attitudes, serving as a clinical resource and developing informational/educational resources and programs.
