We are seeking a contract Cataloger who can work with Japanese language materials.

This is a contract position; number of hours may vary depending on the project and it can be 100% remote. Note: The work is sporadic and not steady. It will vary depending on customer demand.

Please do not apply if you are a translator. We are specifically looking for individuals with library cataloging experience.

About the Role

The Cataloger performs original and copy cataloging based on current standards as well as upgrades of existing minimal level to full level bibliographical records. This is accomplished by keeping appraised of relevant programs and services that enhance the ability of EVIS to provide quality information to customers in an effective and efficient manner.

Responsibilities
  • Perform original and copy cataloging, mostly of Monographs and DVDs, in Japanese to facilitate identification, access, and use. Cataloging will be customized to customer's requirements and MARC files (in.mrc format) will be output as final product
  • Interpret and apply Library of Congress Classification and subject headings, the Dewey Decimal System, the AACR2, RDA, and the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) manuals in cataloging and classifying library materials
  • Report trends in bibliographic services and answer questions for EVIS
  • Maintain knowledge of current description standards, and emerging metadata standards
  • Develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with internal EVIS staff
  • Conduct complex bibliographic research
Requirements
  • Experience using cataloging tools (e.g. OCLC Connexion), computerized cataloging, and standard bibliographic sources, cataloging standards and classifications
  • Knowledge of Japanese language well enough to create accurate records
  • Experience with LCSH for Judaica is a plus.
  • Knowledge of discovery tools and metadata practices supporting discovery
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to complete short-term projects with tight deadlines
  • Knowledge of Microsoft applications such as Word and Excel
  • Desire to learn new skills related to the role including new software
  • Ability to be flexible, to use time wisely and to perform duties in a professional manner
Education and Qualifications
  • Master's degree in library and information science or other graduate degree with demonstrated cataloging experience in a research or academic library
  • 2 years of cataloging experience using RDA, LCSH, LCCN, and MARC21 format
