This position is responsible for managing laboratory functions within Butterball's production facilities, ensuring compliance with regulations and customer requirements. The successful candidate will oversee analytical testing, provide leadership to plant and laboratory personnel, and maintain internal and external product specifications.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and implement laboratory programs, including microbiological and chemical analysis.
- Collaborate with vendors on equipment maintenance, repair, and diagnostics.
- Assist with research and development work on continuous improvement efforts.
- Design and implement sampling programs using company computer software.
- Oversee lethality and challenge studies, and utilize laboratory data to prepare reports and initiate corrective measures.
- Maintain laboratory proficiency testing standards and accreditation.
- Serve as liaison with local, area, and Federal USDA and FDA personnel.
- 5+ years of work experience in a microbiology or food chemistry role, with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Advanced degree (M.S., Ph.D.) can substitute for work experience.
- Experience as a microbiologist or similar function in the food manufacturing industry.
- In-depth knowledge of microbiology, food safety, laboratory processes, production processes, sanitation, live operations, USDA, and state regulations.
- Ability to prepare standard solutions and reagents for use in chemical testing and maintain stock of necessary lab materials.
- Ability to work independently and with cross-functional teams to provide food safety and microbial and chemical analysis expertise.
- Previous experience in a food safety laboratory.
- Familiarity with USDA FSIS Appendices A and B and Guidelines.
- Experience with Culture Independent Diagnostics (Quantitative PCR) and working with vendors on new method validations.
- HACCP, PCQI, and other food safety certifications.
This position requires working in a variety of conditions, including climate-controlled office environments, laboratory environments, manufacturing plant environments, and farm environments. The individual must be able to wear and work in personal protective equipment while in manufacturing, farm, and laboratory environments.
Travel RequirementsFrequent regional travel will be required, with additional travel up to 25% and on an as needed basis.
