Role Overview:
Under the direct supervision of certified educational professionals, this position involves assisting in the structured educational development of students with special needs within a mainstream classroom environment. Responsibilities may include working with students who have severe multiple impairments across various grade levels.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide individualized support to students with special needs, facilitating their educational progress in accordance with their Individual Education Program (IEP);
  • Adapt lessons, instructional materials, assessments, and tests to enhance accessibility and understanding for students;
  • Engage in parallel teaching and tutoring;
  • Assist small groups of students in their learning activities;
  • Implement behavior reinforcement strategies to promote positive behavior;
  • Offer physical assistance to ensure students transition between classroom settings effectively;
  • Support students with personal, physical, and custodial needs, including feeding, lifting, positioning, and mobility assistance;
  • Facilitate range of motion exercises and assist with physical/occupational therapy programs;
  • Support the development of fine and gross motor skills, balance, and comprehension of directions;
  • Assist with speech therapy as required;
  • Follow established medical emergency protocols for students with specific health needs;
  • Teach essential life skills and study techniques;
  • Document and report on student progress;
  • Provide assistance to other special needs students as necessary;
  • Utilize various communication methods, including assistive technology, sign language, and Braille, to support student communication skills;
  • Monitor and record student activities for review by educators and parents;
  • Collaborate with teachers to implement educational programs;
  • Participate in consultations with specialists to address the needs of special needs students;
  • Encourage positive self-esteem and enthusiasm for learning among students;
  • Prepare classroom and outdoor learning environments as needed;
  • Attend regular staff meetings;
  • Adhere to program goals, policies, and procedures;
  • Assist students during transportation as outlined in their IEP, ensuring safety and comfort;
  • Perform additional related duties as required.
Desired Qualifications:
Familiarity with school policies regarding the inclusion of special needs students;
Understanding of curriculum content relevant to assigned areas and/or student IEPs;
Knowledge of health and safety protocols when dealing with bodily fluids;
Awareness of emergency medical care techniques and CPR;
Competence in appropriate intervention methods for special needs students;
Familiarity with behavioral modification techniques;
Skills in modifying classroom assignments for diverse learners;
Proficiency in safe handling and lifting techniques for students;
Ability to use specialized tools such as adaptive software and communication devices;
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written;
Ability to build effective relationships with staff, students, and parents.

Minimum Qualifications:
An associate's degree is preferred, along with six months of experience working with special needs children.

Special Requirements:
Candidates must possess or be able to obtain a Level I - IVPP Fingerprint Clearance card. CPR and First Aid certification are required within one year of hire. Willingness to assist with feeding and toileting of students is essential.

Physical Requirements:
The physical demands of this role include regular standing, walking, sitting, and the ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
