Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Emergency Department Technician to join our team at WVU Medicine. As an Emergency Department Technician, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and supporting our medical staff in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Observe and report patient concerns and changes in condition to registered nurses immediately.
  • Assist registered nurses with admission, transfer, discharge, and general patient care duties.
  • Record vital signs, assist with personal hygiene, and provide other patient comfort measures.
  • Assist with specimen collection and other activities for assigned patients.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment to prevent and control infections and ensure patient, visitor, and employee safety.
  • Report necessary equipment repairs to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to departmental procedure.
  • Communicate with RN regarding nutrition issues, such as poor appetite or lack of understanding of diet changes.
  • Assist with administrative tasks to support department operations.
  • Answer patient call bells and relay messages to appropriate personnel.
  • Perform assigned tests, such as glucose monitoring, urine and stool testing, and maintain quality control testing and logs according to department policy.
  • Perform routine discontinuation of IV catheters.
  • Assist with care of drainage devices, such as penrose drains, chest tubes, and similar catheters, while maintaining accurate output.
  • Ability to perform EKG testing upon request.
  • Transport specimens to the lab as needed.
  • Collect blood samples as per physician order, when phlebotomy credentialed.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Currently certified as a West Virginia Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic or applicable state licensure where services will be performed.
  • Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
