Job Overview

The Histology Technician plays a crucial role in the preparation and processing of tissue samples obtained from surgical procedures. This position involves:

  • Embedding tissue specimens to ensure they are preserved for detailed examination by the Pathologist.
  • Performing precise cutting and staining of tissue samples.
  • Utilizing advanced computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate tissue specimens with wax.

In addition, the technician is responsible for:

  • Labeling requisitions, specimen containers, cassettes, and slides, as well as affixing coverslips to slides.
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment and ensuring all routine maintenance and quality control measures are tracked.
  • Operating, cleaning, and sterilizing laboratory instruments, glassware, and workstations.
  • Filing, retrieving, and distributing pathology reports, blocks, and slides.
  • Disposing of hazardous chemical waste in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
Qualifications

Minimum Education:
High School Diploma or Equivalent is required. An Associate or Bachelor's Degree in Biological Science or completion of an accredited histology program is preferred.

Required Skills:
This role demands critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. The technician must thrive in a fast-paced environment and respond appropriately to various situations.

Certifications:
ASCP Certification as HT or HTL is preferred.

Experience:
A minimum of five years of experience in histopathology under the supervision of a Pathologist is required, alongside the minimum educational qualifications.
