Position Summary: This role involves the daily upkeep and welfare of assigned animals and their habitats through various essential tasks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of animal enclosures and all related equipment to ensure a safe living environment for the animals.
  • Conduct daily inspections of exhibits and enclosures to assess cleanliness, safety, and structural integrity, taking necessary actions to address any issues.
  • Document observations related to animal behavior, veterinary treatments, dietary records, and animal transfers.
  • Administer veterinary care as directed by the veterinarian.
  • Engage in behavioral enrichment activities, training, and conditioning protocols, as well as capture and restraint procedures.
  • Monitor and recognize proper dietary needs and any irregularities in feeding habits.
  • Provide informative and friendly responses to visitor inquiries regarding animal behaviors and zoo operations, enhancing their experience.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Successful candidates must demonstrate the ability to fulfill essential job functions effectively.

Education and Experience:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Animal Science, or a related field is preferred, along with at least one year of relevant experience or a combination of education and experience.

Language Proficiency:

  • Ability to comprehend and interpret safety guidelines, operational instructions, and procedural manuals. Capable of writing routine reports and communicating effectively with visitors and staff.

Reasoning Skills:

  • Ability to apply common sense and problem-solving skills to execute instructions and adapt knowledge of animal care to evolving situations.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Possession of a valid Texas Driver License is required.

Physical Demands:

  • This position requires regular standing, walking, sitting, and the use of hands for various tasks. The ability to climb, balance, kneel, and lift heavy objects is essential.

Work Environment:

  • Employees may encounter wet or humid conditions, moving machinery, and exposure to various weather elements and animals. Noise levels are typically moderate, with occasional exposure to unpleasant odors.
