Job Summary:

A Biomedical Equipment Specialist at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland performs critical safety testing, preventive maintenance, repairs, and pre-acceptances on biomedical equipment and systems in a highly efficient and responsive manner to meet the needs of our customers.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide our customers with cost-effective biomedical equipment maintenance, efficient technical support, accurate clinical support, and assistance in educational needs to promote and ensure the safe and effective use of biomedical equipment in the clinical environment.

This includes, but is not limited to, electronic patient and non-patient equipment used in the patient care area, electronic equipment designed for diagnostic, therapeutic, and laboratory applications.

The Biomedical Equipment Specialist will continuously monitor and seek improvement in the Environment of Care, particularly in terms of patient, staff, and facility safety.

Key responsibilities include developing and maintaining biomedical equipment inventory and history records, coordinating equipment service inspections, and implementing plans to reduce equipment failure and increase reliability while minimizing the risk to patients and staff.

Key Requirements:
  • Education: High School Diploma/GED and Post High School Vocational / Military / Specialized Training as a Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) - AA degree; Bachelor's degree in Clinical /Biomedical (BME) or AAMI Certification preferred.
  • Experience: 5+ years of previous experience as a Biomedical Equipment Technician or military trained Biomedical Equipment Repair Technician.
  • Knowledge/Skills:
    • Maintain a current driver's license and meet all hospital insurance policy carriers' requirements.
    • Personal computer skills.
    • Word processing software (MS Word).
    • Spreadsheet/database software (Excel).
    • Strong English reading, verbal, written communication skills.
    • Ability to interact successfully with management, physicians, Board members, and staff.
    • Ability to work independently, problem solve, and handle multiple priorities.
    • Ability to use service manuals and schematics to maintain, calibrate, and repair a wide variety of biomedical equipment.
    • Provide technical support on equipment operation and maintenance for the purpose of supporting the clinical staff.

  • Rep Use of UE/Grasp: Up to 6 hours
