About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Directional Drill Operator to join our team at Telcom Construction Inc. As a key member of our construction crew, you will be responsible for safely and efficiently operating drill equipment and other trenching or digging equipment to install and maintain underground telecommunications cabling service lines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate Drill Equipment: Safely and efficiently operate drill equipment and/or other trenching or digging equipment, including plows, backhoes/excavators, rock saws, dozers/lead tractors, and tractor trailers.
  • Install and Maintain Cabling: Install and maintain underground fiber optic and other telecommunications cabling service lines.
  • Restore and Landscape: Restore and/or landscape disturbed areas of the jobsite.
  • Develop Bore Schedule: Develop and maintain an appropriate bore schedule.
  • Dig Pits and Trenches: Dig pits, trenches, and potholes as directed by job plan, including when crossing utilities by hand or by use of appropriate mechanical tools.
  • Site Setup and Cleanup: Set up and clean up the jobsite, including setting up safety perimeters using signage, cones, and safety barriers.
  • Load and Unload Equipment: Load and unload tools, materials, and equipment.
Requirements
  • Experience: Must be experienced with Directional Drill equipment and understand their capabilities and limitations.
  • Drill Setup and Design: Experience with drill setup and design processes.
  • Instruction Following: Ability to follow instructions.
  • Tool Proficiency: Ability to use small tools/hand tools.
  • Reading and Understanding: Ability to read and understand work orders, safety rules, and operating instructions.
  • Valid Driver's License: Must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Unrestricted Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement strongly preferred.
  • Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving: Must have good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Safety-Conscious: Must be very safety-conscious.
  • Communication: Must be able to effectively communicate with crew, customers, and vendors.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Utility Construction Experience: Previous utility construction experience.
  • Locator Proficiency: Ability to proficiently use locators to safely identify utilities.
  • Print and Map Reading: Ability to read prints and interpret utility maps to identify the type and size of underground utilities.
Physical Requirements
  • Climbing and Lifting: Must be able to climb into and out of equipment (trucks, cars, backhoes, trenchers, etc.) and lift/carry 50 lbs regularly and up to 100 LBS as needed with or without assistance.
  • Standing and Walking: Duties outlined in this position will require the employee to stand, crouch, sit, bend, use hands and fingers to handle or feel as well as reaching with hands and arms to spaces both high and low.
  • Remote Work: Remote work may be required, including long driving and sitting.
  • Specific Vision Abilities: Specific vision abilities required to perform this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus potentially near and/or far as needed.
